The Impossibility of Eating Dessert First

What better way to celebrate the New Year than with a meditation upon dessert! Frequently, on “Be-Lied,” I pair an informative entry with a “My Story” entry. However, for this topic, I am pairing a “My Story” entry on “Be-Lied” with a word meaning entry, "Dessert Desertion or Assert Desert" on “Be-Worded.” I hope you eat these entries/entress up!

MY STORY

I have a long history of eating dessert first—or so I thought. My “Eat Dessert First” inclination began in childhood. On Sundays after church, we occasionally went out to eat, particularly if Daddy had received a bonus. Our usual restaurant was a cafeteria-style establishment, Piccadilly. Usually, I chose Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans, with chocolate pudding for dessert. At the table after removing my dishes from the tray and arraying them in front of me, I chose to eat my chocolate pudding first. I made that choice not because I preferred the treat of dessert first, but because I have more of a savory tooth than a sweet one. I preferred to end my meal with the savory taste—a final chunk of Salisbury steak sopped in mashed potato—not the sweet taste of chocolate pudding. Still, eating dessert first is a treat, particularly when adults are convincing children to eat their vegetables.

My Eat Dessert First indulgences continued as I aged. Because of the timing of my birthday, I am frequently with family when that date occurs. One such year, my family went out to celebrate at Don’s Seafood Restaurant in Baton Rouge. As the Birthday Girl, I declared the meal an “Eat Dessert First” occasion. The server thought I was kidding until I insisted on ordering from the dessert menu before we ordered our entrees. That birthday meal remains legendary in the annals of Prescott family history.

My daughter and I have Big Decade Birthdays in the same calendar year. To celebrate the last Big Decade Birthday year, we visited Graceland, a first for each of us. Our next Big Decade Birthday falls in 2016. Months ago, we began discussing venues and timing for the Big Decade Birthday Trip. However, our very first decision was to name this trip the “Eat Dessert First Birthday Tour.”

In spite of my extensive history of doing what I thought was Eating Dessert First, and my daughter and my best-laid plans for our 2016 Eat Dessert First Birthday Tour, I found information that may require me to revise my Eat Dessert First memories and us to rename our birthday tour. Find out about this tragic discovery on “Be-Worded,” “Dessert Desertion or Assert Dessert.”
